May 10th: Back home from AK! Had car trouble at Logan airport, car is being repaired in Boston and need to take my rental back soon, I hope. Wanted to share another photo of my AK students at last Friday's concert performing on the Junk Music Playstation we constructed. I especially like the auto hood on the top. This structure will go on the school playground!
May 7th: Well, time to leave Unalakleet. Truck is loaded and am heading to Anchorage, the last stop before coming home!
May 4th: Concert last Fri nite in Unalakleet. The kids did so well! Here's a group of the little ones!
May 2nd: Last Friday, in the very small village of Shantoolik, I met this great couple who had just prepared some walrus meat to dry until it becomes jerky consistency. They also had some dried-smoked salmon which was amazingly flavorful and totally rich in protein. It is a staple here in the winter months and also, many native travelers pack it as it is very small, fits into the pack and is great, nutritious food. Tonite, minus 5 F - Happy Spring from Alaska!!!!! Tomorrow, you will meet my kids - The Junk Music Posse here in Unalakleet!!!! Stay warm!
April 30: Today, we went to NOME. Here, our plane is approaching the Nome Airport. Made infamous by the Alaskan Gold Rush, this town is some 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Back to the students in Unalakleet tomorrow. Photos to follow! Incidentally, I am writing this at 11:56pm and its dusk outside.
April 29: I am having a bad bout with an intestinal disorder that pretty much flattened me today - forcing the cancellation of visits to three villages. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better as I am supposed to fly to three more villages during the day tomorrow. No photo post of today's activities for sure!!!!
April 27: From the Alaskan Bush here in Unalakleet, we see the shore amassed with driftwood and ice that's still up to four feet thick! The days are beautiful and clear and spring is in the air!!!
April 25: The view from the airplane yesterday as I flew from Anchorage to Unalakleet at 10,000 feet - hundreds of miles of frozen tundra. Spectacular views and hard to believe that such vast spaces have no human habitation.
April 25: The view from my hotel in Anchorage yesterday. I'm currently in Unalakleet where there's no cell service, limited internet, and miles of frozen terrain. I'll try to post some photos soon!
April 22: Happy Earth Day everyone!!!!!!! Here's a shot from my Earth Day Celebration at Montgomery College, MD yesterday. Off to Alaska today!!!
